Why Recycle Monitors and TVs?

Why Recycle Monitors and TVs?
A NEW CHALLENGE FOR OUR ENVIRONMENT
“A cathode ray tube (CRT), found in older monitors and televisions, is estimated to contain five to eight pounds of lead. Lead is a highly toxic metal and may cause a range of health effects, from behavioral problems and learning disabilities, to seizures and death.”
According the US Environmental Protection Agency, computers and other electronics are the nation’s fastest growing category of solid waste. Currently, it is estimated that about 50% of US households own a computer and that at least 315 million computers will become obsolete annually. This is a result of rapid advancements in technology and greater consumer use of computer products. However, most of the electronic waste contains hazardous materials, such as lead and mercury, which are harmful to the environment if disposed of improperly. The increasing numbers of retired electronics and computers have brought the new challenges to our environment, ecological systems, and our one and only earth.
